
Recreation Facility
Operator
This program is designed to maximize the lifespan
of recreation facilities in the NWT by ensuring safe and effective
operation, maintenance and management of existing and future
facilities though the training of competent recreation facility
personnel. The program is based on the occupational standards
developed for facility operators.

Course Descriptions:
Risk Management
– 2 Days
Understand
the importance of a solid Risk Management program for their
facilities. Basic
preparation and implementation of a life-cycle document.
Operations Management
- 3 Days
Instruction in administration and supervisory practices including:
work planning, employee supervision, office administration,
inventory control and cash handling.
Custodial Care -
3 Days
Instruction in positive custodial attitudes, technical and
practical information, scheduling, standards and safety.
Arena Tech Level I
– 2 Days
Instruction
and practical sessions in the making, marking, painting and
maintenance of natural and artificial ice.
Arena Tech Level II
– 4 Days
Instruction
in advanced refrigeration theory, maintenance and troubleshooting
facility operations, staff scheduling, safety and customer
service.
Ice Resurfacers -
1 Day
Self propelled and tractor mounted ice resurfacer operation and
maintenance. This course includes flood carts, ice edges and other
related ice making equipment.
Curling Ice Maintenance
– 3 Days
Ice
making, ice maintenance, stone care and equipment.
Pool Operation Level I
– 2 Days
Instruction
and practical sessions in swimming pool operations. Topics include water circulation/filtration, disinfections
and water balancing.
Pool Operation Level II
– 4 Days
Advanced
principles in swimming pool operations. Topics include filtration,
circulation, advanced chemistry and water balancing, hot water
pools and trouble shooting.
Parks and Sports Fields Level I
– 2 Days
Practical
experience in play space planning, design considerations, material
selection and safety. Instruction
in maintenance of playgrounds, sports fields and parks.
Topics include playgrounds, ball fields, trails and
waterfronts.
Parks and Sports Fields Level II
– 2 Days
Under
Development.
Basic Trade Skills I -
6 Days
Practical training in basic carpentry, dry walling and painting.
Content includes reading plans, construction from a plan and the
proper and safe use of hand and power tools. Community projects
will also be completed.
Basic Trade Skills II -
8 Days
Practical Training in the operation and maintenance of plumbing
and minor electrical systems. This course is a basic introduction
and will not include skills beyond the limits allowed for a
facility operator.
Heating and Air Ventilation Systems -
7 Days
Detailed instruction and practical sessions on the operation and
maintenance of heating and air ventilation systems. Boilers are
covered in detail in this course. Instruction in forced air
furnaces can be offered upon request.
Energy Management -
2 Days
Instruction on developing an energy management system with
discussions on actual costs, cost saving measures and practical
experience in conservation methods.
Site and Structural Maintenance -
3 Days
Care and maintenance of building sites and structures including
inspection, maintenance, weathering and landscaping.
Preventive Maintenance Planning -
3 Days
The theory of preventive maintenance planning and instruction on
how to set up a manual and log book to ensure efficient operation.
Concession Operations -
2 Days
Instruction in the operation of concessions including: inventory,
cash handling, bulk orders and rules of operation.
