Emergency Preparedness
Offered to Community Officials through the Canadian
Emergency Preparedness College (CEPC)
Basic Emergency Preparedness (Home Study and
Classroom)
The Basic Emergency Preparedness Course, or its
equivalent, is offered by the Emergency Measures Organizations (EMO). A CD-ROM version of
the course is also available through the EMO. The course is structured to provide the
participants with a broad base from which to carry out emergency planning and operations.
This course is intended for individuals with a role in community emergency response. This
is an entry level course and is considered a prerequisite for all other courses conducted
at the Canadian Emergency Preparedness College or through EMO.
Emergency Operations Centre Management - Arnprior
and Yellowknife
Course Objectives
To enable the participant to work as a member of the
emergency operations centre team, which manages the emergency response for the overall
municipality.
Course Description
The intent of the training course is to prepare emergency
management practitioners to carry out their role as members of an Emergency Operations
Centre team. The EOC Management Course trains participants to effectively manage and
coordinate the overall operations within their community, while also providing the
necessary support to the site management team during a multi-service response to an
emergency. Course participants will apply the course concepts in simulated emergency
situations.
Target Population
The course is intended for senior level emergency
management practitioners who will have a decision-making role in the EOC. Course offerings
are available for large (Collegeville) and small (Grandville) communities. Applicants must
confirm that their community size/resource level is consistent with the course offering
and demonstrate their emergency role as it relates to the course objective.
Prerequisites
Candidates must have completed the Basic Emergency
Preparedness course or its provincial/territorial equivalent and must have a
decision-making role in an Emergency Operations Centre that requires the training provided
by this course.

Emergency Public Information
A program designed to assist the student in becoming
comfortable interacting with the media during crises. EMO can organize program based on
demand using well respected providers in this field. Courses would be based on the program
which was offered at the Canadian Emergency Preparedness college up to 2001.
Exercise Design
The Exercise Design course aims to meet the needs of
public and private sector planners who have a designated role in the Canadian emergency
response field. It is intended to prepare candidates to design, conduct, and evaluate
exercises.
Prerequisites
This is an advanced level course. Candidates must have
attended the Basic Emergency Preparedness course offered by the Canadian Emergency
Preparedness College or by the Emergency Measures Organization.
Search and Rescue (SAR)
Basic Ground SAR in Canada
This program is recognized by EMO and RCMP "G"
Division as the standard for Ground SAR members in the Northwest Territories. The course
can be completed in a self study format or in classroom. It is designed to enable local
SAR volunteers to acquire basic ground SAR skills and understanding. While basic SAR
principles are similar regardless of area, this program has been extensively modified to
better reflect the terrain, weather and human differences of the eastern and western
arctic. The content is based upon the most current North American SAR understanding, with
additions and modifications specific to the north. It is a leader in National SAR Training
and education strategies.
Managing the Search Incident
This program is designated for individuals with a Search
Management function. This primarily would be members of the RCMP however places are
available for community based SAR managers to take this training. Offered at least once
each year in Yellowknife, contact EMO for further information on this program.
