Community Government Administrative Assistant Training Program


What will I learn?

This program will prepare participants with the skills and knowledge
required to work effectively as an Administrative Assistant in Community
Government organizations.

Course Descriptions

Community Government Computer Foundations

Computer Foundations is one of six courses in the Community Government Administrative Assistant Training Program.  Today, having computer skills is essential to effectively operating Community Government offices.

 The course is organized around the following ten key objectives:

1. Becoming knowledgeable about how the computer operates and how it        performs,
2. Becoming proficient in using Word Processing (MS Word),
3. Writing, saving, editing, retrieving, printing and filing documents,
4. Learning how to format business reports, letters, and other common office documents,
5. Developing and managing an effective computerized filing system,
6. Conducting Internet searches for information,
7. Sending, receiving and managing e-mail and attachments,
8. Using an electronic calendar to record and schedule appointments,
9. Using computer programs to back up work and assist with office management, and
10.Learning how to protect computers from viruses.

Community Government Advanced Computer Applications

Community Government Advanced Computer Applications is one of six courses in the Community Government Administrative Assistant Training Program. 

This course continues from Community Government Computer Foundations and introduces more advanced concepts, skills and techniques. 

 Major topic introduced in this course include:

 

1.      Advanced Microsoft Word

2.      PowerPoint

3.      Access

4.      Advanced Excel

5.      Outlook (optional)

 

Bookkeeping for Community Governments

Bookkeeping for Community Governments is one of six courses offered in the Community Government Administrative Assistant Training Program.  Basic bookkeeping skills are fundamental to success in any office environment.

 This course will help Administrative Assistants to fulfill the bookkeeping responsibilities of their jobs.

 Major topics introduced in this course include:

1.  Issuing, coding and authorizing purchase orders,
2.  Verifying and seeking authorization for disbursements,
3.  Preparing cheques and obtaining signatures,
4.  Reconciling petty cash, accounts payable and accounts receivable,
5.  Preparing invoices, aged listing and analysis and journal entries,
6.  Compiling source documents,
7.  Issuing receipts and customer statements, and
8.  Making bank deposits.

Communicating With the Public

Communicating with the Public is one of six courses in the Community Government Administrative Assistant Training Program.  Communicating effectively is fundamental in any office environment.

This course will help Administrative Assistants to communicate more effectively with the public.  Participants will learn more about how to make good decisions, manage stress, and how to integrate goal setting in their professional roles.

Major topics introduced in this course include:

1.  Liaising with community organizations and agencies,
2.  Communicating assertively,
3.  Working cooperatively with others,
4.  Professionalism and public relations,
5.  Cross cultural communication skills,
6.  Decision making,
7.  Problem solving,
8.  Goal setting, and
9.  Career planning.

Community Government Office Procedures

This course focuses on administrative assistants and their ability to become effective members of an administrative team.  Participants will be provided with the knowledge, skills and values in the broad areas of communications, customer service, office systems and time management.

 Major topics introduced in this course include:

 1.  Communicating effectively both inside and outside the organization,
 2.  Roles and responsibilities of administrative assistants,
 3.  Improving client service,
 4.  Using professionalism in the workplace,
 5.  Managing and communicating information (verbal and written),
 6.  Processing telephone calls (incoming and outgoing),
 7.  Processing mail,
 8.  Learning about the five main filing systems,
 9.  Using bring forward systems and scheduling appointments, and,
10. Eliminating time wasters in the workplace.

 

Community Government Advanced Office Procedures

Community Government Advanced Office Procedures is one of six courses in the Community Government Administrative Assistant Training Program. 

This course is a continuation from Community Government Office Procedures and introduces more advanced concepts, skills and techniques. 

Major topics introduced in this course include:

1.      Taking and Processing Meeting Minutes
2.
      The Budget Cycle
3.
      Empowering Legislation for Community Governments
